EJ's Favorite Writing Prompts
That stupid cursor is blinking and you are staring down a blank page. We get it. The blank page is second only to that pile of laundry we left in the washer too long as things that annoy us but that don't go away unless you do something about it. So to get the wheels in the ol' noggin turning, we gotta just do the thing and get to writing. But what? Here are some of our favorite writing prompts.
- Identify your proudest moments. How did you feel? What did you do to feel so proud? Who was with you?
- If you could delete a memory, which would it be? Why?
- Write a letter to your younger self.
- Write a letter to your mom or dad about a time they embarrassed you. Or an apology letter. The list of things that you wish you had said or wish you hadn't said.
- What was the worst day of your life?
- What were you afraid of when you were a child and why? Are you still scared of it today?
- Write about a time you were terrified do to do something but did it anyway.
- Tell the story of your first kiss.
- Describe the locker room of your middle school gym class. Who is there with you? How does it smell? What parts of you are you embarrassed about?
- How did your first date go?
- List three ways that people describe you. Why do they describe you this way? Is this how you describe you? Is this how your family of origin would describe you?
- What was the first album you remember effecting you? When was the last time you listened to it? How did you stumble on this album?
- Describe a typical Thanksgiving when you were a kid. How does it compare to how you celebrate now?
- Identify your biggest insecurity and how you got it. What are the steps you are taking to overcome it?
- Write about your favorite memory with your mom or dad. Write about your favorite memory with your childhood best friend.
- Have you ever stayed overnight in the hospital or been to the emergency room?
- Describe your relationship with your siblings. Do they see you as the child you were or the adult you are now? Are you friends? Why or why not?
- Recall a time you had a meltdown. What let to it? How did you recover? Did you ask for forgiveness?
- List 5 of you all time favorite songs. What memories do you have attached to them?
- Recount a time in your life when you had a fresh start. Compare the person you were before and after this new beginning.
- Talk about the happiest day of your life.
- What skill do you have that you are the most proud of. How did you develop it?
- If you have nay tattoos, describe them, when you got them, and their significance.
- How did you meet your best friends?
- Describe your parents' dynamic. How did their relationship affect your perception of love and marriage.
- Talk about a major change you had to go through in your life. How did you cope with it, and what did you learn?
- Talk about a time you felt closest to your mom or dad.
- Recount what it felt like to first hold your child.
- Pick one memory associated with each season.
- Write about an instance when you were uprooted or unmoored.
- When is a time when you trusted your gut instincts and were right? Have there been ties they've been wrong? Have their been times they were right but you ignored them? What do those guy instincts feel like in your body? Would your life be different if you had or had not listened to those gut instincts?
- What are you most looking forward to?
- Where is your favorite place in the world? Why? How does it feel there? What do you do there? Who do you go there with? How does it sound?
